MUSIC & MOVIES
From time to time, I will write about music I enjoy. Current “popular” music leaves me a little south of excited. I’ve always enjoyed music with a little bit of an edge or voice that calls into question conventional thinking or conventional wisdom. One paradox of my own evolving musical taste and sensibilities is my relatively recent “return to roots.” Like most of my friends growing up it was English music that was most influential – The Beatles, The Who, Rolling Stones and The Kinks stand out as long time favorites.
But by the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, overblown and over produced “arena” rock just didn’t cut it for me anymore. So – like many of my peers I ventured towards punk and reggae influenced music, and I found new musical heros in Joe Strummer and the Clash, Talking Heads, REM, etc.
All of this wide-ranging stuff that passed for “new wave” pushed me to listen differently to bare-bones produced, emotionally honest music – no matter who recorded it. Consequently, I started to explore music we now call Americana.
So – I’ll drop a post in about music shows and albums from time to time.
My tastes in movies run all over the place – kind of like my tastes in music. Maybe the best way to illustrate it is to give you a quick look at some of my current favorites movies (not exhaustive):
Hard Days Night
Field of Dreams
To Catch a Thief
All Quiet on the Western Front (1930)
Stranger than Fiction
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Lord of the Rings
and literally – hundreds more!
